An all-Canadian clash early on Wednesday as the 40-21-4 Edmonton Oilers welcome the 25-31-11 Montreal Canadiens to Alberta. Edmonton had won four straight at home before falling in overtime in their most recent game to the Colorado Avalanche. They have pushed themselves into second place in the Pacific and have their sights set on chasing down the Vancouver Canucks in the last month of the regular season. They will face that team at Rogers Place in mid-April, which could be a massive game. The improvement this season has been defensively, a top-six team now in goals conceded. Stuart Skinner and Kalvin Pickard have done well between the pipes and with the usual excellent forwards producing the goods, they look the most complete unit they have done in a long time.
The Habs have had another poor season with only the Ottawa Senators and Columbus Blue Jackets below them in the standings in the Eastern Conference. Things have not been good at either end of the ice, sitting 27th out of the 32 teams in both the fewest goals scored and the most goals conceded. With just four wins in their last 17 games, any hopes of making the postseason have slipped away and they only have pride left to play for. This is game two of a five-game road swing, losing the opener to the Calgary Flames 2-5. One bright point for them has been the recent play of Juraj Slafkovsky who has five points in his last four games. The 19-year-old is in his second year in the league and is starting to look like he can justify his position as the number one overall pick in the 2022 draft.
