Edmonton Oilers vs Los Angeles Kings Prediction & Betting Tips - NHL
by Joseph King | in NHL Predictions
The first day of the Stanley Cup Playoffs wraps up with a matchup between the Pacific division second seed Edmonton Oilers and the third seed Los Angeles Kings for game one of this best-of-seven series. The Oilers come into this series with huge expectations as they seek their first Stanley Cup in over 30 years and they kick things off with a rematch of last season’s first round playoff opponent. Edmonton got the better of the Kings last year, prevailing 4-3 in a thrilling seven-game series before going on to ultimately get swept by the eventual champion Avalanche in the Conference Finals. The Kings, meanwhile, will be hoping to advance past the first round in the playoffs for the first time since their 2014 Stanley Cup winning season. Edmonton come into this series as the favorites with odds of 1.47 to make it to a second round while Los Angeles have odds of 2.76 to advance. The winner will face a second round matchup against either Vegas or Winnipeg.
The Oilers finished the year with 50 wins from their 82 games and a .665 winning percentage, putting them just two points behind the first-place Vegas Golden Knights for the top spot in the Pacific division. All eyes will be on superstar Connor McDavid who captured his third straight Art Ross trophy and fifth total in his illustrious career. Edmonton were renowned the entire season for their high-octane offense, powered by the previously mentioned McDavid as well as Leon Draisaitl, the Oilers led the league in scoring in the regular season by a wide margin, racking up 325 goals with the Bruins being the only other team to crack 300. What has gone somewhat under the radar, however, has been the Oilers new found defensive resilience. Edmonton went on a fantastic run to end the season, winning nine straight games. In that run, the final seven games saw the Oilers concede only six total goals; twice shutting out their opponents and on four occasions allowing only a single goal.
The Kings face a tough task to stop this red-hot Edmonton team. It doesn’t help that Los Angeles has lost their last two matchups against them and were one of the teams to be stopped in their tracks against the Oilers rock-solid defensive run. The Kings managed to score only one goal in two meetings when the teams faced off at the end of March and the first week of April. The Kings finished third in the Pacific division with 47 wins and 104 points, putting them five points behind their playoff opponents today. Los Angeles ended the season with two straight wins but had previously lost three in a row before that. What hints towards this game one matchup potentially being a low-scoring contest is the fact that only once in the last five games has LA managed to score more than three goals.

Our Edmonton Oilers vs Los Angeles Kings Prediction
Edmonton undoubtedly deserve to be the favorites coming into game one given their excellent recent play and their success against LA in their last two meetings. However, the price is a bit steep to back a home win. Therefore, we are going to target the defenses to show up in what could ultimately turn out to be a cagey first game in this best-of-seven series. Edmonton have been on a roll defensively and there is nothing to suggest that will change any time soon. In addition, they’ve shown in the last three weeks that they are capable of shutting down this Kings offense. Our Edmonton Oilers vs LA Kings prediction: Under 6.5 goals.
