One of the best games on Tuesday’s NHL slate sees the Edmonton Oilers hosting the Detroit Red Wings. Both of these teams have been in fine form with the Oilers sitting third in the Pacific division while the Red Wings come in at fifth in the Atlantic.
After nearly breaking the NHL’s regular season winning streak, Edmonton has cooled off with two defeats in their last three. It was a fantastic run for the Oilers which saw them win 16 straight and completely turn their season around. The result is the bookmakers now listing the Oilers as the favorites to win the Stanley Cup, despite the team being 15 points behind the Canucks for the top spot in the division. The hosts have a seasonal record of 30 wins, 17 losses and one overtime defeat for a points total of 61. They’re holding on to the third and final Pacific playoff spot by a slim margin as they hold a three-point lead over the fourth-place Kings. Edmonton is coming off a 4-0 away loss to the Kings on the second night of a back-to-back. It was the first time they had failed to find the net since September of 2023.
The Red Wings have made some good progress from the team that finished seventh in the division last season. With a record of 27 wins, 18 defeats and six overtime losses, Detroit’s points total of 60 has put them in a good position to make the playoffs for the first time in eight years. They currently sit just one point off the third-place Lightning for a spot as one of the three Atlantic teams and they hold a four point lead in the race for one of the two Wild Card spots. The Red Wings were able to earn a 4-3 overtime win over the NHL-leading Canucks thanks to a Jake Walman goal. The win was the third in the last four games for the visitors who should be extremely high in confidence coming into this contest.
