Seventh seed Don a Vekic and the unseeded Katie Bouter will battle at the San Diego Open. They will square off in the quarterfinals with the winner playing either Daria Saville, Emma Navarro, or Katerina Siniakova. Donna Vekic battled through three sets to defeat the qualifier Marina Stakusic in the last round. She has now won eight of 12 matches this season and is on course for another final appearance here. The Croat finished as runner-up here in her debut two seasons ago, which is also the last time she participated. Despite her progress here, Vekic has dropped five places in the live ranking to number 33. This is after she lost 172 points. Vekic’s best result thus far was a semifinal finish on indoor hard court in Linz.

Katie Boulter is only now playing past the second round at an event this season. The Briton has compiled a strong 8-3 record but hasn’t dominated in the main draw stage. To advance to this round, she defeated second seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in three sets. She had to dig deep after losing the first set with the match lasting two hours and 20 minutes. The 27-year-old has now moved up six places and into a new career-high world ranking. She is ranked 43rd in the live ranking and can move up a further six places if she advances to the semifinals. Boulter is making her debut in this event.
