Host nation the Philippines gets their FIBA World Cup underway when they take on potential dark horses the Dominican Republic for this Group A clash. It hasn’t been an ideal warm-up period for the Philippines ahead of the basketball World Cup. They’ve lost their three exhibition games, an 84-77 loss to Mexico, 107-84 defeat to Montenegro and a disappointing 81-71 loss to Estonia Youths. They’ll hope that the home crowd can give them a boost as the 41st FIBA-ranked nation seeks a spot in the knockout rounds. With only one naturalized spot up for grabs in each team's rosters for the FIBA World Cup, Philippines coach Chot Reyes had a tough decision to make. Reyes ultimately opted to take Utah Jazz spark plug Jordan Clarkson in place of PBA legend Justin Brownlee. Clarkson is a former NBA sixth-man award winner and is coming off a season which saw him average 20.8 points per game, 4.4 assists and 4.0 rebounds.
The Dominican Republic will have high expectations of making a deep run at the 2023 basketball World Cup. Their hopes are pinned on the performance of NBA superstar Karl Anthony-Towns who is suiting up for the DR for the first time since he was 16 years old. Towns, now 27, is an accomplished NBA veteran and three-time All-Star who averages 23 points per game in his career. The Dominican Republic lost three of their four warm-up games, although Towns played in only two of those. In the two games that the Timberwolves forward participated, the DR would record a 94-88 win over 15th-ranked Canada and lose 86-77 against top-ranked Spain. The Dominican Republic, ranked 23rd, are expected to kick things off with a victory and come into this game as double-digit favorites.
