Dominic Thiem bids to reach the final of the ATP Tour Finals for the second year in a row. Last year saw him beaten in the final by Stefanos Tsitsipas but on the way he beat Novak Djokovic in three sets in the round-robin stages. 2020 has been a big year for Thiem with his maiden Grand Slam title in New York. He hasn't won a tournament since then, losing in the quarter final of the French Open and in Vienna. This week saw him return to form as he won his first two round-robin matches against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Rafael Nadal. That saw him win his group with one match to go and he lost the rather meaningless match against Andrey Rublev on Thursday evening. Thiem has won only four of his 11 matches against Djokovic but is 2-1 up in their last three meetings. That included wins at last year's French Open and in the round-robin stage of this event last November. Their most recent match was when Djokovic beat Thiem in a five-set Australian Open final. a

Novak Djokovic hasn't had it all his own way this week. He began his round-robin group with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Diego Schwartzman. However, that was followed by a straight sets defeat by Daniil Medvedev. That left him needing to win his final match and he did just that with a tight two set win (second set won by a tie-break) over Alexander Zverev. Djokovic has been in fine form in this disrupted year. However, he's only won one of his last three tournaments, perhaps he might have won the US Open if not defaulting, who knows? This could go either way and a match with over 22.5 games looks likely.
