Eighth seed Ben Shelton take on the unseeded Dominic Thiem  in the second round of the Estoril Open clay court tournament. A former world number three, Thiem started this week ranked 111th in the world and only moved up one place to 110th in the live ranking thanks to his first-round win over the qualifier Sebastian Ofner. Thiem had to come from behind to get what was only his second win of the year with his previous five matches all being lost. Since returning from injury, the Austrian has been on a downward spiral 

Ben Shelton has won half of his 14 matches. The American defeated unseeded Constant Lestienne in straight sets in the first round and will feel confident about advancing in the competition. He has moved up to a career-high 38th place in the live ranking thanks to this winning start. Shelton’s highlight of the season was advancing to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open which was also his debut appearance at the Grand Slam. This is the first-ever match between the two players and will see the winner advance to the quarterfinals where a match with fourth seed Roberto Agut or the unseeded Quentin Halys awaits.
