Seventh seed Jannik Sinner will make his season debut on clay on Wednesday when he faces off with the unseeded Diego Schwartzman in the second round of the ongoing Monte-Carlo Open. Sinner has won the only other previous encounter with Schwartzman who will seek to even it out here and set up a third-round clash with 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz. Schwartzman has lost in the second round in this Masters 1000 tournament in four out of the seven times he has participated and with how he has performed so far this season, another second-round exit looks more than likely. The Argentine former world number eight has managed just four wins out of the 14 matches he has played. This has seen him drop out of the world’s top 30 for the first time since 2017 and is currently placed at number 48 in the live ranking. A decent performer on clay, Schwartzman won his first match on the surface in his sixth attempt when he beat the unseeded David Goffin in straight sets in the first round. He will hope the momentum gained from that is strong enough to propel him past Sinner.

Jannik Sinner may not have been playing on clay this season but has had a hugely successful time on hard courts. Sinner has won 21 out of the 26 matches he has played this year and this impressive start has seen him make it to the final of three tournaments winning one (Montpellier). He arrives in Monte-Carlo for his third appearance after losing in the final of the Miami Masters to Daniil Medvedev who also beat him in the final in Rotterdam. Sinner is currently ranked ninth in the live rankings and will seek to surpass his best-ever result here (quarterfinal) to avoid falling out of the top 10 again.
