18th seed Donna Vekic must see off the challenge of unseeded Diane Parry in the first round of the Australian Open. For the winner, there's a second round match against either unseeded Marketa Vondrousova or qualifier Jana Fett.

Vekic is at 18th in the live rankings and that equals her career-high. The 28-year-old reached the quarter-finals of this outdoor hard court Grand Slam two years ago. Vekic will want to avoid a repeat of 2024 when losing in round one.

The Croatian has struggled for wins of late. Three matches played this year in the United Cup and Brisbane International have all ended in defeat. One was inflicted by Coco Gauff and another by Yulia Putintseva who went on to reach the last eight in Brisbane.

Vekic reached one hard court semi-final last year and has won three titles on this surface in the past.

Diane Parry is the world number 66 and reached the third round of this tournament in 2024, the first time she'd got past round one. This is her first tournament since last October when losing to Olga Danilovic and winning just one game.
