Sixth seed Liudmila Samsonova will take on the in-form 14th seed Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open. This match will mark their second meeting in 2024. Ahead of the clash, here’s our analysis and prediction.

Shnaider has for the fifth time this season advanced to the quarter-finals of a tour event. In this shape, she will be confident of securing a fourth title. Debuting in Toronto, Shnaider is coming off a big win against top seed Cori Gauff.

She defeated the world number two in straight sets, losing just five games, to claim her first top 10 win. Shnaider, who has now won 40 matches this year, has moved to 22nd in the live ranking. The 20-year-old defeated Samsonova on clay in Rome in straight sets earlier this year.

Samsonova finished as runner-up here last year. She devastatingly lost to Pegula, only managing one game in the final. The Russian could meet up with Pegula in the semi-finals if she wins here and this will act as a motivator.

Samsonova has won both rounds here without dropping a set. She defeated qualifier Moyuka Uchijima then Elise Mertens to qualify for the quarters. It hasn’t been a smooth year though; before arriving in Toronto, she had won just one more match than the 17 she lost.

However, in the mix of her inconsistencies, she has had some strong performances. One was her title win in Hertogenbosch during the grass season but she has dropped to 17th in the live ranking. The victor here will set up a semi-final battle with the winner between Jessica Pegula and Peyton Stearns.
