Jessica Pegula’s fine form in Toronto continues early Monday, with a semi-final match against Diana Shnaider. Going into their first career meeting, who will edge this battle? We have the preview and a prediction.

Diana Shnaider, playing as the 14th seed, is on the hunt for yet another title. The Russian is having a strong year and has so far won four titles, three at tour level. Having compiled an excellent 41-15 record, she is one of the favourites to emerge champion and mark an excellent debut here.

Getting to the semis, Shnaider saw off last year’s finalist Liudmila Samsonova in three sets. It was the third time she needed to win a decider to progress in Toronto. The 20-year-old’s success in this WTA 1000 event has propelled her up to 20th in the live ranking, a new career-high ranking.

Third seed Jessica Pegula triumphed here last year to claim her second WTA 1000 title and now she is just two wins from defending her gong. The American has been in excellent form in Toronto.

She has won all her matches in straight sets. In the quarters, she defeated compatriot Peyton Stearns by the loss of nine games. Pegula, who won the title in Berlin during the grass season, has compiled a strong 24-10 record.

Fourteen of her wins have come on hard courts. The current world number six has however lost three of the four semi-finals she has contested this season. The winner of this first career meeting between Shnaider and Pegula will get to square off with Amanda Anisimova or Emma Navarro in the final.
