Spring training games on Saturday include the Detroit Tigers taking on the New York Yankees. The Tigers were better in 2023, finishing 78-84 and showing enough promise to think that they can challenge for the AL Central title this year. It was their highest win tally since 2016, two years after they were last seen in the playoffs. They have brought in veterans Mark Canha and Gio Urshela to help bolster a young batting lineup and there have been some changes to the starting rotation as well. Eduardo Rodriguez has gone to Arizona but they have brought in Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty to back up the improving Tarik Skubal. The return from injury from Casey Mize looks another plus for what could be a strong rotation.

2023 was a year to forget for the Yankees, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016, just a year removed from winning the division and going to the ALCS. Gerrit Cole won the Cy Young but it was a rare high point in a season where Aaron Judge missed 42 games after an injury sustained against the Dodgers. Giancarlo Stanton had a poor season while Anthony Rizzo also picked up an injury in Southern California, this time against the Padres that saw his season eventually shut down. Bounce back years from them plus the blockbuster signing of Juan Soto can see the Yankees back to their best but it will rely on everyone staying healthy. Carlos Rodon needs to find his form again on the mound with the signing of Marcus Stroman, an interesting one to add to the rotation.
