The final day of games before the All-Star break will see the 26-18-5 Detroit Red Wings hosting the 19-25-2 Ottawa Senators. The Red Wings have won nine of their last 12 games, sitting in the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference as things stand. They have failed to make them for the last seven seasons, far too long for a team that had managed to gain a berth for the prior quarter of a century before that. The Atlantic Division is the most competitive this season with the top five teams all having 57 points or more, none of the other three have more than three teams past that milestone. They are going to have to produce a strong second half if they are to keep their current standing but captain Dylan Larkin is having a career year and that has the potential to keep them rolling for a while yet. He has points in 11 games straight and will see this as a great opportunity for 12.
A 2-7 defeat for the Sens against the New York Rangers which ended a win streak could easily have had a negative effect on them, especially as they took a 2-0 lead. They went three goals behind to the Nashville Predators in the early hours of Tuesday morning before fighting back to claim the win in overtime, 4-3. That will have given them plenty of confidence and they are 5-2-2 in their last nine so they have finally started to put a run together. For some reason it has been the case with the Sens over the last couple of seasons, they have enjoyed a solid second half but not good enough to dig themselves out of the hole they created for themselves in the first half.
