The Detroit Red Wings host the Florida Panthers at the Little Caesars Arena for this Monday night matchup in the NHL. The Panthers have been red-hot coming into this one and are riding a streak of back-to-back wins as well as six wins from their last eight games. The uptick in form has Florida in the race for one of the two Wild Card playoff spots. The Panthers sit just behind the Penguins and Islanders in third-place in the race but can see themselves leapfrog the Penguins with a win. Florida has a record of 35 wins, 27 losses and seven overtime defeats on the year, totaling 77 points. Their last outing resulted in a 4-2 home win over the New Jersey Devils which capped off a lengthy seven game homestand. They’ll now take to the road where they Panthers have struggled this season; Florida is below .500 with a record of 14 wins 17 losses and three overtime defeats when playing away from home.
The Red Wings stand in the Panthers way and will be hoping to recover from an ugly stretch of results. Detroit is coming off a 5-1 home loss to the Avalanche, the second consecutive defeat for the Red Wings and the ninth defeat in the team’s last 11 outings. The downturn in form has seen Detroit fall all but out of the playoff picture as they now trail the Wild Card spots by nine points heading into the final stretch of the regular season. The hosts have a record of 30 wins, 29 losses and three overtime defeats on the season for a total of 69 points. They’ll be disappointed because a month ago they were serious contenders to qualify for the postseason. Detroit’s offense has all but abandoned it in the last two games as they have netted a total of only two goals in the last two outings.
