The pick of the first-round matches in the handball event at the 2024 Paris Olympics will see France face off against Denmark on Saturday afternoon. This match pits the world number one Les Bleus against the second-ranked Danes. Let's get into the prediction.

France will begin their home tournament looking to emulate the incredible feat they managed in Tokyo 2020 when both their men’s and women’s teams claimed gold. 

Les Bleus have dominated this sport in recent years, winning gold in three of the last four Games, with the only exception being a silver medal at the 2016 edition in Rio. They have also claimed one bronze in the past (1992) and came fourth in Atlanta in 1996. 

The French are carrying a record of nine wins posted in their last 10 matches in all competitions and are heavily fancied to win this group ahead of their upcoming opponents. 

With that in mind, most expect Les Bleus’ major competition in this tournament to come from Denmark, who are now ranked second in the world and are unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions. 

The Danes were the first side (apart from the host nation) to book their place at the 2024 Games, winning the 2023 World Men's Handball Championship. Their opponents in the final were none other than France, who they beat 28-24. 

Since then, these two have met only once, at the European Championship at the start of this year. They played out a 27-27 draw in regulation time before France went on to win the match 33-31.
