On six occasions a country has won the Men’s World Handball Championships two times in a row. No country has ever won three successive titles but that’s what Denmark are aiming to do this year. They take on Belgium in preliminary round Group H and then face Bahrain and Tunisia. With the top three qualifying for the next phase, there’s little chance that Denmark won’t progress. They have had two convincing world title wins in 2019 and 2021 winning 18 and drawing one of their 19 matches. Last year didn’t see them become European champions though, losing in the semi-finals to Spain, before beating France to finish third. January has seen them warm up for this title defence with two comfortable wins over Saudi Arabia by a combined total of 41 goals. They know it will be tough to keep their hands on their title after losing to Sweden in the EHF Euro Cup. That’s their only loss in the last six games played.

Belgium are also strongly fancied to make it out of this group. They may well lose against the world champions but have a good chance of beating Bahrain and Tunisia. The Belgians had a tough time qualifying via the European play-offs. They failed to win any of their first three games but rallied to finish second behind Greece in their group. Slovakia were beaten in the next phase and then they received a walkover after Russia were expelled from the tournament. While Denmark are two-time defending world champions, Belgium are making their debut in the finals. Their three friendlies this month have produced wins over Morocco and Iran before being beaten by Poland. That was a tough game and this will be even harder for them.
