Frances Tiafoe had a tough first round match at Roland Garros. He survived it and now faces unseeded Denis Shapovalov in the second round. For the winner, there’s a round three match against either the eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz or unseeded Brandon Nakashima. Tiafoe is the 25th seed but found himself two sets to one down to qualifier Mattia Bellucci in round one. He fought back to win both the final two sets 6-4. The American is 26th in the live rankings but only 39th in the Live ATP Race at the time of writing this preview. His clay court season began well with a run to the final of the US clay court championship. It’s not gone so well in Europe though with just one win in five matches before this tournament. A win here will see him in round three here for the second successive year, but he’s never gone further.

Shapovalov leads Tiafoe 4-2 in previous meetings with Shapovalov, but this is their first match on clay. It’s their first match in three years and Tiafoe won that in straight sets. The Canadian beat Luca Van Assche in straight sets in round one. He’ll hope to win this match and equal his best run at Roland Garros which was reaching the third round last year. He’s down to 126th in the live rankings and outside the top 100 in the ATP Race. His best run on clay this year has been winning two matches to get to the last 32 in Madrid.
