World number 95 Denis Kudla bids to reach the second round at Indian Wells. He faces the 184th ranked Alejandro Tabilo in his opening match with the winner up against fifth seeded Matteo Berrettini in the second round. Kulda was as high as 53rd five years ago but at one point this year was down to 124th. The American had success on the Challenger Tour last month with a run to the semi-finals in Cary, USA. His most recent ATP Tour event saw him qualify for the San Diego Open but lose to Andy Murray in the first round. He hasn't done too bad in Grand Slams this year. At the US Open he beat Laslo Djere (ranked 51st) before losing in the second round and before that, made it to the third round at Wimbledon, losing to Novak Djokovic.

Alejandro Tabilo had to qualify to make it into the main draw of this tournament. He was seeded 17th in the qualifiers but beat sixth seeded Evgeny Donskoy for the loss of just three games. He's dropped 17 places in the rankings this year. Before this week he had won only one of his last six matches. 2021 highlights have been making the final of a Challenger Tour event in Lexington three months ago. He's had little success on the APT Tour and the best he's done in a Grand Slam this year was the third qualifying round at the French Open. Go for Kudla to get the win here and set up that tough second round match.
