Eugenie Bouchard was as high as ninth in the rankings but that was nine years ago. Now ranked 216th, the Canadian takes on Dayana Yastremska in the second qualifying round of the US Open. The winner here will face eithr Dalma Galfa or Elena-Gabriela Ruse for a place in the main draw. Bouchard hasn't been in the top 100 since 2018 but has been climbing the rankings this year having started it in 327th position. That's mainly down to her reaching the last eight of a clay court tournament in Florence. It hasn't gone so well on other surfaces and this is only her second tournament since Wimbledon in June. Her only other event was the hard court tournament in Montreal where she lost in the first qualifying round. Her best performance in the US Open was a fourth round appearance nine years ago. Bouchard hasn't made the main draw since 2019 and lost at this stage last year. No Grand Slam main draws have been reached since 2020 and that was on clay. The first qualifying round of this US Open saw her beat Katherine Hui in straight sets, her first win in a Grand Slam this year,

Dayana Yastremska is the world nuber 111 and 12th seed in qualifying. Her career high is the 21st position she held in January 2020. This year has seen her win a WTA 125 tournament and she also got to the last 32 in Dubai. Her best performance in the US Open has been reaching round three four years ago. Her Grand Slam record isn't good though with seven consecutive first round losses and being beaten in the third qualifying round at Wimbledon this year.
