Donna Vekic and 28th seed Dayana Yastremska will face off in the third round of the Wimbledon Championship. The winner here will play one of Brenda Fruhvirtova, Paula Badosa, Lily Miyazaki, or Daria Kasatkina in the fourth round. Yastremska is enjoying her return to the main draw at SW19 and is now one win away from equaling her best result here.

The Ukrainian hadn’t won a match at this major since her fourth-round finish on her debut appearance in 2019. To set up this showdown with Vekic, Yastremska had to come from a set down to defeat Varvara Gracheva. The match lasted for two hours and 35 minutes, marking her 20th win in 43 outings this season.

Yastremska, who won the first three encounters of this series with Vekic, has moved to 23rd place in the live ranking. A shock semi-finalist in Melbourne earlier this year, the 24-year-old will be hopeful of another deep run at a major.

This match will mark the seventh career meeting between these two players. Vekic is having another strong grass campaign and will be confident of prolonging her stay at the All England Club. She has won seven of 10 fixtures on the surface and this has resulted in the highlight of her season.

The Croat arrived in London after finishing as runner-up in Bad Homburg, ending a year-long wait for a tour final appearance. Vekic defeated lucky loser Erika Andreeva in straight sets in the second round. Her 19th win of the season bumped her one place up, to 36th in the live rankings.

Vekic has won the last three matchups with Yastremska. One of those was on grass in Eastbourne two seasons ago. Their most recent showdown was earlier this year in Linz where Vekic allowed Yastremska just two games.
