Second seed Aryna Sabalenka will seek her first win over 32nd seed Dayana Yastremska when they meet next in Rome. They will battle in the third round of the Italian Open with the winner next battling Elina Svitolina or Anna Kalinskaya. Dayana Yastremska has never lost to Sabalenka in three previous meetings. This should have her confident of progressing past this round. They last squared off four seasons ago in Adelaide with Yastremska winning in straight sets in the semi-finals. Yastremska is coming off a marathon three-set battle with the veteran Laura Siegemund. The match lasted close to three hours and saw the Ukrainian come from a set down to win. Her second win on clay this season improved her record to 15-9. It also nudged her up one place to 32nd in the live ranking.

Aryna Sabalenka will be eager to end Yastremska’s winning run against her. As one of the more in-form players in the WTA in 2024, she will be confident of achieving this. Sabalenka is also coming off a three-set battle in the second round. The world number two defeated American Katie Volynets in two hours and 15 minutes and had to come back from a losing position. Sabalenka was unable to defend her title in Madrid before arriving in Rome and lost in the final to Iga Swiatek. This was her second runner-up finish in three finals contested so far this year. Sabalenka made the semi-finals in Rome two seasons ago to record her best-ever finish in this WTA 1000 event.
