Eighth seed Max Purcell has unseeded opposition in round two of the Atlanta Open. He faces David Goffin with the winner up against either top seed Ben Shelton or qualifier Juncheng Shang in the last eight. Let's see just what our prediction is for this match.

Max Purcell has shown some good form in recent weeks but it was all too late to qualify him for the Olympics. He made it to the final of the Eastbourne grass court tournament but then lost in round one at Wimbledon.

This is his first tournament since that Grand Slam and the Australian is 66th in the latest rankings. A win over Goffin will take him into his first hard court quarter-final of the year. His last four matches on this surface had ended in defeat so he has to find some form before the US Open.

There were signs that might be happening when he beat fellow Australian Christopher O'Connell in round one of this hard court tournament. He had to battle hard though after losing the first set of that first round match.

Now he takes on David Goffin who is the world number 98. That's way below the seventh position he achieved back in 2017. The Belgian had only won three ATP Tour main draw matches before this week. A win over Purcell will take him into his first quarter-final of the year on the ATP Tour.

His only last eight appearance in 2024 was in a Challenger Tour event held in Canberra and that was in January. He also had to go to a final set in the first round of this tournament. Goffin won the first set against Denis Shapovalov, lost the second and then won the decider for the loss of one game.

He's 100th in the live rankings as the Belgian is about to drop the points earned for reaching a Challenger Tour semi-final last July. We tip Purcell to get the win in this match.
