David Goffin heads to Monte Carlo fresh from winning the clay court tournament in Marrakech. He hopes to continue his rise back up the rankings with a win over Jiri Lehecka in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters. Goffin is up to 47th in the world rankings after his title win on Sunday. That was only his second tournament win since 2019 for the former top ten player. 2022 has been a bit of a struggle at times for the Belgian. He got to the last eight in Sydney at the start of the year but not to another quarter final until a Challenger Tour event in Phoenix in March. On clay, Goffin has reached a French Open quarter final and won three ATP Tour tournaments. He has two quarter final and one semi-final appearance in Monte Carlo.

Jiri Lehecka is ranked 99th in the world and has won four Challenger Tour clay court titles. He began this year ranked 141st but got into the top 100 after reaching the semi-finals in Rotterdam in February. Lehecka beat Denis Shapovalov that week but eventually lost in three sets to Stefanos Tsitsipas. On clay this year, he reached the last eight of a Challenger Tour event held in Chile. However, after a first round exit in Marrakech, he'd lost three successive matches. Two qualifying rounds had to be won for him to get to the main draw in Monte Carlo. That wasn't easy and he had to come from behind against Henri Laakonsen before beating Benjamin Bonzi (back in as a lucky loser and a possible second round opponent) to qualify.
