Defending champion Cameron Norrie faces unseeded David Goffin in the Lyon Open second round. Norrie is seeded second this year behind Felix Auger-Aliassime. If he wins this match, waiting in the last eight could be sixth seeded Sebastian Baez. The British player began this tournament ranked 14th in the world.and a couple of wins will see him move up to 13th. Norrie has already had success on clay courts. He lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Buenos Aires final, before defeating him to win the Rio title. His European clay court season hasn't been a disaster but he would have expected some better results. He's failed to reach the last eight in the four events he's played so will be looking for a good run this week. His most recent tournament was in Rome where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the last 16. Norrie leads Goffin 2-0 in previous meetings with one of those on clay last year. That was a strange match with Norrie winning the first set without dropping a game. Goffin led the second set 5-3 but then retired hurt.

David Goffin is a former top ten player but started this Lyon Open ranked 113th. He was as high as 40th earlier this year but then lost the points when winning the Marrakech title last year. The Belgian has had some success this year on the Chalenger Tour. He won a hard court event in his homeland and recently reached the last four in France. On the ATP Tour, it's been a bit of a struggle with only two of his six clay court matches won before this tournament. Both those wins came against players ranked outside the top 150. This week has seen him get a third win with victory over a qualifier in round one. That was against Alvaro Lopez San Martin, currently ranked 298th in the world.
