Fourth seeded Daria Kasatkina takes on unseeded Magda Linette in the last eight of the Silicon Valley Classic. The Russian is ranked 31st in the world but in the live list is up to 30th and can rise another place if winning this match. In the WTA Race, Kasatkina is 18th and will go up to 15th with a win here. That high placing for ranking points earned this year shows what a good 2021 she's had. The year began with the former world number 10 in 72nd place. She's won two tournaments this year with success in the Phillip Island Trophy and the St Petersburg Ladies Trophy. This is the third time in her last four tournaments that Kasatkina has reached at least the last eight. This tournament has seen her beat Caroline Garcia after losing the first set.

Magda Linette is ranked 45th in the world and has a highest ranking of 33rd achieved last year. The Polish player began this year in 40th place but by April had slipped to 51st. Her first tournament this year was in late March as she recovered from a knee injury. Only one of her first six matches of 2021 were won and that was against a player ranked outside the top 300. May saw her return to form as she reached the semi-final of a clay tournament in Strasbourg. A last 32 at Roland Garros followed beating Ashleigh Barty in the second round, when the world number one retired injured. Another shock was caused at Wimbledon when beating fifth seeded Elina Svitolina. Last week saw her lose in the first round of the Olympics tournament, winning just three games against Aryna Sabalenka. Better form has been shown this week in San Jose with wins over Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove and sixth seeded Petra Martic 7-5 7-6. She's only had one previous match against Kasatkina, getting a win at the 2018 Australian Open. Kasatkina looks in the better form at present, back her to get the win here.
