Daria Kasatkina and Karolina Pliskova will on Wednesday square off in the second round at Eastbourne International. Ninth seed Kasatkina dropped four games, one in the last set in her 2-0 win over Anhelina Kalinina in the first round. The win was her first on grass in her second match on the surface this season. It improved her record for the campaign to 16 wins in 30 matches. The Russian is currently placed at number 11 in the live ranking. She will seek to go beyond the quarterfinals at Devonshire Park for the first time in what is her fifth appearance here. Kasatkina and Pliskova have played each other three times before. All three matches however were played seven years ago with Kasatkina winning the second encounter.

Unseeded Pliskova has defeated Kasatkina twice and will hope that she extends her advantage in this fixture on Wednesday. Pliskova is a two-time champion in Eastbourne, winning in 2017 and 2019. She has however not gone past this round in the last two editions. The Czech former world number one has struggled with her form and arrived for the tournament having lost three consecutive matches. She halted this streak rather fortuitously as Elise Mertens retired from their first-round showdown with the match at one set a piece. Pliskova has won 19 of the 30 matches she has played this season and is currently ranked 18th in the live ranking. The winner here will play the winner of the tie between second seed Caroline Garcia and the qualifier Ana Bogdan in the quarterfinals.
