Tenth seeded Daria Kasatkina is up against third seed Elena Rybakina in the National Bank Open last eight. Kasatkina began this tournament ranked 14th in the world but is up to 12th in the live rankings. A win over Rybakina will see her climb another place. The Russian is in only her third hard court quarter final of the year. January saw her lose to Belinda Bencic in the final of the second Adelaide International tournament and the last eight was also reached in Abu Dhabi. Since then her best performance was in getting to the final of the Eastbourne grass court event. Back on hard courts, Kasatkina was beaten in the last 16 of last weeks tournament in Washington. It's gone better in Montreal though with three straight sets victories all against unseeded opponents.

World number four Elena Rybakina has only won one of her three previous matches against her opponent. The most recent match was won by Kastkina in San Jose last year. A strange match that went to three sets but only had 21 games played, including Kasatkina winning the final set to love. This run to the last eight in this WTA 1000 tournament has Rybakina back up to third in the live ranking list. Two titles have been won by her this year and both were WTA 1000 events, including the Indian Wells hard court tournament. Two other high level hard court finals have also been reached in the Australian Open and Miami.Rybakina is playing her first event since Wimbledon where the defending champion lost in the last eight. In this event being held in Montreal, Rybakina had to come from behind to beat Jennifer Brady in her first match but then beat Sloane Stephen for the loss of six games. This could be a tight match and we go for Rybakina to get the victory.
