Daria Kasatkina is the fourth seed at the Silicon Valley Open. The Russian takes on unseeded Caroline Garcia in round two with the winner facing either Magda Linette or sixth seeded Petra Martic in the last eight. Kasatkina is ranked 31st in the world but was as high as 10th three years ago. She's been steadily climbing back up the rankings this year, having started 2021 in 72nd position. For ranking points earned this year, Kasatkina is 21st place and can rise to 18th if beating Garcia. The highlight of her year so far has been winning the Phillip Island Trophy and the St Petersburg  Ladies Trophy.

Caroline Garcia is ranked 68th in the world, a long way down from the fourth position she held in 2018. It took her until the Emilia Romagna Open in May until the French player reached the last eight of a tournament this year. No players ranked in the top 100 were beaten that week. Recently, Garcia got to the semi-finals in Lucerne but again she didn't have to beat a player ranked in the top 100 to get that far. Her run ended when beating by Clara Burel, who was ranked 125th at the time. Her Olympics singles tournament didn't last long, Garcia lost in the first round to Donna Vekic. Garcia beat world number 153 Emina Bektas in the first round of this tournament. Back Kasatkina to get the win here.
