Aryna Sabalenka attempts to reach her fifth consecutive Grand Slam quarter final. Trying to stop the second seed achieving that feat is the 13th seed Daria Kasatkina. The quarter final opponent for the winner of this match could be fifth seeded Ons Jabeur, who beat Sabalenka at Wimbledon. Sabalenka hasn't just been getting to quarter finals. the 25-year-old has made it to at least the last four in her previous four Grand Slams with one title won in Australia. The past two years have seen her get to the semi-finals of this Grand Slam. This could be the month when Sabalenka finally sees herself top of the ranking list published by the WTA. At present she is top of the live list and the WTA Race. Unless Iga Swiatek gets a better finishing position than her in this tournament, the next ranking list will see her finally named world number one. This tournament has seen her in impressive form with three straight sets wins and just 12 games dropped. Just two were lost in her most recent win, one in each set as she defeated Clara Burel. Sabalenka leads Kasatkina 4-2 in previous meetings with four of the last five matches won.

Daria Kasatkina is in the US Open fourth round for only the second time in her career. The only other time the Russian made it this far was in 2017 and three of the past four years saw her lose in the first round. Another exit in round one looked a possibility when losing the opening set of her first round match against Alycia Parks. The next two sets were won for the loss of only six games and Kasatkina made it into round two. More problems followed in her next match as the 26-year-old world number 14 again lost the first set. This time it was against unseeded Sofia Kenin but again a successful recovery was made. It was easier in round three with a straight sets win over qualifier Greet Minnen.
