World number 13 Daria Kasatkina and 42nd-ranked Alycia Parks will face off in the first round of the 2023 US Open on Tuesday evening. The winner of this match will move on to face either Ana Bogdan or Sofia Kenin in round two. Kasatkina comes into the US Open following a third-round exit in Cincinnati two weeks ago. There she beat Peyton Stearns and Varvara Gracheva in the first two rounds but was knocked out by Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. The Russian reached the final at Adelaide 2 at the start of the year, which was her best showing on the hard court. Since then, Kasatkina has not got past round three on the surface. While her record this year reads as 29-20, her hardcourt record is the worst of all surfaces. She is 11-11 on the hard, while her grass and clay records stand at 6-3 and 12-6, respectively. However, five of her six titles have come on the hard, and it is her favoured surface despite her relatively poor record of late. As such, she is the massive favourite in this one, according to the bookies. 

Meanwhile, it was just last year that Alycia Parks was ranked outside the top 200 in the world rankings. However, she has made excellent progress and reached her peak ranking of 40th earlier this month. Parks has made the step up this year to compete on the WTA circuit, having spent most of last year playing in the lower division. The American also earned her first-ever WTA title this year which came on the hard surface in Lyon at the start of the year. Since then, though, she has failed to get past the second round of any hard-court competition. Parks comes into the US Open after failing to qualify for the Cincinnati Masters main draw. She overcame Vera Zvonareva in the first qualifier but was beaten by Aliaksandra Sasnovich the following day. Her record is now in the negative territory at 17-20 for the year and 6-8 on the hard. Bookies are giving her about a 5/1 chance of causing an upset here.
