The qualifier Daria Saville will take on unseeded Zhu Lin in the first round in San Diego. This is their second encounter this season and the winner will play either Leylah Fernandez or Tatjana Maria next. Daria Saville has won both times in which she has been paired up against Lin. The latest meeting was in Hobart in January. She won in three sets on her way to a semifinal finish in the event. This remains to be her best result so far and she will hope to produce another deep run. Saville, who has so far won seven of 12 matches, qualified for the main draw here without losing a game. This is the debut appearance here for the former world number 20. Saville has started the week having made an 11-place jump in the live ranking to 137th.

As Saville has moved up the WTA world ranking, Zhu Lin has dropped one place and starts the week ranked 59th. The Chinese number three has had a shaky start to the year and has so far compiled an 8-6 record. All 14 matches have been played on hard courts. Lin has managed just one win in her last four outings and was defeated in the first round in Dubai last time out. The 30-year-old is also making her debut in San Diego. Her run to the final in Hua Hin remains to be her best result so far.
