Anastasia Potapova is the 11th seed in the season opening Brisbane International. Potapova faces Daria Saville (Gavrilova before getting married) in round two of this hard court tournament. The winner will face either sixth seed Veronika Kudermetova or unseeded Anna Schmiedlova in round three. Potapova began this tournament ranked 28th in the world which is seven places below the career high she achieved last June. The 22-year-old will want a good warm-up for the first Grand Slam of the year as she's yet to get past the third round of one. Potapova is playing her first tournament since October. Her season ended with three defeats but the San Diego quarter finals were reached.

Daria Saville is down at 209th in the world rankings and received a wild card to play in the Brisbane International. The Australian was 53rd on the list this time last year but sank as low as 322nd in August. Savill missed a lot of time last year due to an ACL injury and didn't start her year on tour until June. Her best result in 2023 came on clay when reaching the last four in Hamburg but this is a hard court tournament. One hard court quarter final was reached in 2023 but before this event, Saville had lost her last two matches, including being beaten by Han Shi who was ranked 557th at the time. There's been one previous meeting with Potapova and that was lost in 2022 but was played on clay. Saville beat qualifier Danna Yastremska in round one, losing just four games. That moved her up to 194th in the live rankings. We tip Potapova to get the victory.
