Ninth seed Daniil Medvedev will play the unseeded Laslo Djere to begin his Madrid Open campaign. They will battle in the second round, with the winner of their fourth career matchup taking on Juan Manuel Cerundolo or Felix Auger-Aliassime next. Read on to find our prediction for this match.

Medvedev won the last two meetings with Djere. They most recently faced off on grass in Halle two seasons ago. That win came a year after he had secured a 3-0 victory at the French Open.

The Russian, who has been lacklustre this year, will hope to continue with this winning run. Medvedev has compiled a 14-8 record and is yet to reach a tour final. The 29-year-old, who lost in the third round in Monte-Carlo, had dropped out of the ATP top 10 in the live ranking.

Laslo Djere made it to the third round in Madrid in his tournament debut in 2019. He has never made it that far again, but he has also made just two appearances here since.

The Serbian defeated the qualifier Fabio Fognini in straight sets in the first round. This was his 18th win of the season and the 15th on a clay surface.

Djere is a strong clay performer and has won over 300 matches on similar surfaces. Advancing to the second round has bumped him up nine places and into 62nd in the live ranking.
