Top seed Daniil Medvedev had a scare in the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships. He had to come from behind to beat Lorenzo Sonego and now faces unseeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the quarter finals. Waiting in the last four of this outdoor hard court tournament will be either third seed Hubert Hurkacz or fifth seeded Ugo Humbert. Medvedev was ranked fourth in the world when this ATP 500 event got underway. He can't climb any higher even if winning the Dubai title for the second year in a row. He is second in the ATP Live Race but can't overtake leader Jannik Sinner. Medvedev is only playing second tournament of the year. The other was the Australian Open where he lost in the final to Sinner. He's won two matches in Dubai and before defeating Sonego, he beat Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has lost each of his three previous matches against Daniil Medvedev. Two were played on hard courts last year, the other on clay in 2021. Fokina was ranked 24th at the start of this tournament and is now up a place after reaching this quarter final. He had to go to three sets to get past Fabian Marozsan in round one, losing the second set. Round two saw him defeat Jakub Mensik with his opponent retiring after losing the first set and going 1-0 down in the second. The 24-year-old got revenge on Mensik after losing to him in Doha last week. Fokina is in his second quarter final of the year after getting to this stage in Marseille.
