Seventh seeded Danielle Collins faces Sloane Stephens in round two of the Silicon Valley Open. The winner of this match takes on either second seeded Elena Rybakina or unseeeded American Claire Liu. Collins is ranked 36th in the world but up a place in the live rankings after her first round win over Shelby Rogers in straight sets. In May, Collins was as low as 51st but since then the American has won a clay court tournament in Palermo. Earlier this year, Collins beat Ashleigh Barty in the Adelaide Classic.

Sloane Stephens is playing in her first tournament since Wimbledon. It's her first time in this event since 2012. Stephens is the world number 67 but in 2018 was a career high third. That was a year after winning the US Open title. 2018 saw her also reach the final at Roland Garros but her last eight Grand Slams have seen her fail to get past the fourth round. This year began with her 40th in the rankings but last month saw her slide to 73rd. Highlights of the 2021 have mainly been on clay with a last eight in Charleston, semi-final in Parma and last 16 at Roland Garros. The first round of this tournament saw her beat Catherine McNally for the loss of six games. Collins can be backed to get the win here, it may well go to three sets.
