We're guaranteed an American player in the third round of the French Open. Ninth seeded Danielle Collins takes on unseeded Shelby Rogers in this all-American second round clash. Collins reached the final of the Australian Open and is a former quarter finalist in this tournament. That was achieved two years ago and last year, Collins made it to the third round. The world number nine has only played in two clay court tournaments this year prior to Roland Garros. Those were in Madrid and Rome but her best was a last 16 in Rome. Collins did have a good win over Simona Halep in the Rome Masters, so that shows her ability on this surface. The first round of this Grand Slam saw her defeat lucky loser Viktorija Tomova for the loss of just four games.

Shelby Rogers began the French Open with a world ranking of 50 but is up to 44th in the live rankings. A win over her compatriot would see her back in the top 40. Rogers reached the last eight at Roland Garros six years ago. There's been little success in Paris since then and the past two years have seen her make a first round exit. The American has been getting used in recent weeks to losing her first match. Three clay court tournaments in Charleston, Madrid and Rome all saw her fail to win a match with the highest ranked opponent being Yulia Putintseva who was in 44th position that week. Rogers began the year with a quarter final in Adelaide but that's her only last eight appearance in 2022. The first round saw her defeat world number 54 Tereza Martincova in straight sets.Rogers has had two previous matches against Collins and the score is level at 1-1. Both matches were on hard courts in 2021 with the most recent won by Rogers when Collins retired in the second set. Collins has made good progess since then and can get the win here with 20th seeded Daria Kasatkina her likely third round opponent.
