27th seed Danielle Collins bids to reach her second Australian Open semi-final. The American faces unseeded Alize Cornet who is in her first ever Grand Slam quarter final. Collins is world ranked 30th but up to 21st in the live rankings. A win over Cornet can take her up to 14th when the new list is published. It was three years ago that Collins made it to the last four of the Australian Open. Her only other quarter final was in Paris two years ago. This is her first tournament of the year, 2021 ended with a semi-final in Linz. To reach the last eight, Collins began with two straight sets victories, then had to come from behind to beat Clara Tauson in the third round. The last 16 saw Collins knock out 19th seeded Elise Mertens, again losing the first set.

Elize Cornet first played in a Grand Slam in 2005. Finally this week the French player has reached the quarter final of one. The 32-year-old is ranked 61st but is up to 37th in the live rankings. Reaching the semi-final can see her rise to 28th, still way behind the 11th place she held 13 years ago. Two warm-up events didn't go too well for Cornet, losing both her matches but she did take Naomi Osaka to three sets. Her best previous Grand Slam result was reaching the fourth round, something she's done in all four events. The last three years have seen her lose in the second round in Australia but it's gone much better this time around. Three seeds have been beaten with Garbine Muguruza (3rd) and Tamara Zidansek (29th) beaten before defeating the 14th seed Simone Halep in three sets in their last 16 match. It's been a big week for her but Collins looks in the better form and can get the win here.
