Two out-of-form players meet in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters. Daniel Evans takes on Sebastian Ofner with both being unseeded for this outdoor clay court tournament. The winner will have a tough second round match against fifth seed Alexander Zverev. Evans is 50th in the live rankings but is having a poor 2024. He’s down at 178th in the ATP Live Race and has only won one of his last six matches. His most recent loss was in the second round to Roberto Carballes Baena in Marrakech. That was disappointing as he was the third seed in that clay court tournament. He’s yet to get past round two of any tournament this year. He’d love a return to the form that saw him reach the last four in Monte Carlo three years ago but that looks unlikely.

Sebastian Ofner was the second seed in Marrakech but lost to Aleksandar Vukic in three sets in his first match. That was a tight contest with two of the sets going to a tie-break. Ofner is 44th in the live rankings but like his opponent he has been struggling for consistency this year. That explains him only being 84th in the Live ATP Race. His year began well with a semifinal in Hong Kong but he’s also lost five of his last six matches. All three of his matches on the South American clay court tour ended in defeat. He at least has had some good form in the past on clay. That includes getting to the last 16 at Roland Garros last year. He’s won five clay court tournaments at lower levels. This is his first time in the Monte Carlo Masters and we believe he can make a winning debut.
