Daniel Evans will on Monday square off with Lorenzo Musetti in the first round of the 2023 Cincinnati Masters. Both players are unseeded. Evans is back in the US and will hope to come out on top here as he did in Washington. The Briton won his first title of the season at Rock Creek Park to end a two-year wait for a tour crown. He was however unable to build on this momentum in his next tournament in Toronto and was eliminated in the first round. Evans has struggled with his form in 2023 and despite his recent success, he is still on a losing record. He has lost 19 matches which is five more than the 14 he has won. The majority of his victories and defeats have come on hard court. Evans has lost both encounters with Musetti though none has been on hard court. He is currently ranked 28th in the live ranking having dropped down seven places.

Lorenzo Musetti is also struggling with his form on hard court but has fared better overall than Evans. Coupling this with his head-to-head advantage in this fixture, he will be confident of starting things off here with a win. Musetti has compiled a 28-19 record thus far with the majority of those victories and defeats coming on clay. On hard court, he has struggled with inconsistency and has won only one more match than the five he has lost. The Italian arrives for his third appearance in Cincinnati after falling in the third round in Toronto. This saw him drop one place to 18th in the live ranking. Musetti made his main draw debut in this Masters 1000 tournament last season and was eliminated in the first round. The winner here will advance to play third seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round.
