24th seeded Dan Evans takes on David Goffin in the first round of the Australian Open. British tennis has seen a revival in the men's game but like Cameron Norrie, Evans is yet to even reach a Grand Slam quarter final. His best performance so far has been a fourth round at the 2021 US Open, only the second time since 2009 that he's made it past round three. Evans then reached the semi-finals in Sydney, losing to eventual winner Aslan Karatsev. He's had two previous matches against Goffin and has won them both. The most recent win was on clay where he won a three-setter in Monte Carlo.

David Goffin is world ranked 45th but that's a drop of 31 places in the last 12 months. The Belgian reached the last eight of this tournament in 2017 but hasn't got past the third round since then and lost in his first match in 2021 losing a five-setter to Alexei Popyrin. The winner of this match takes on either Popyrin or Arthur Rinderknech in the second round. Goffin won a hard court tournament in Montpellier last February but the rest of the year didn't go so well. He lost his last six matches of the year and then missed the last four months of the year due to knee problems. began this year with a loss to Alex Molcan. Goffin won two matches in Sydney last week. He then lost the first set 6-2 to Andy Murray and then retired, again due to a knee injury. Evans can be backed to win this.
