Daniel Elahi Galan and Ugo Humbert will battle out the semi-final at the Challenger Cagliari event on Saturday, with the winner going on to face either Laslo Djere or Ben Shelton in the final. Galan has seen his ranking slip this year, dropping from 67th at the start of the year to 100th at present. The Colombian’s best performance of the year came in at the Sarasota Challenger event, where he reached the final, overcoming the likes of Aleksandar Vukic and Tomas Machac, but was unable to best Daniel Altmaier, who went on to lift the trophy. Following that tournament, Galan suffered a first-round exit in Madrid but has bounced back well here in Cagliari, with his most notable win to this stage coming in the Round of 16, where he beat the number one seed in this tournament, Yoshihito Nishioka, in three sets. Galan is now 10-12 for the year and will have his work cut out in this one against a higher-ranked opponent in Humbert. 

In contrast, Ugo Humbert’s hard work this year has seen his ranking improve notably. The Frenchman was ranked outside the top 100 in January this year but has gotten that down to 77th coming into this tournament. Like his opponent, Humbert has made one final appearance this year, which came at the Pau Challenger event, where he was beaten by Luca Van Assche in three sets. Here in Italy, Humbert has already beaten Gianluca Mager, Andrea Pellegrino, and Taro Daniel, which takes his record to 16-11 for the year and 5-3 on the clay. Despite holding a superior ranking in this one, Humbert will know that he has a match on his hands against an opponent that relishes this clay surface.
