World number 56 Daniel Galan and world number 149 Jan Choinski will on Sunday battle in the Hamburg European Open qualifiers. The winner of this match will advance to the tournament’s main draw set to begin on Monday. Galan is playing in Hamburg for the second time after his debut last season. He defeated the wildcard Max Hans Rehberg in a comeback win in the first round of qualifying. Despite the win, he has dropped down nine places in the live ranking to 65th. This is after he lost 55 ranking points. Galan has struggled for form this season and currently has won the same number of matches as he has lost. The majority of his wins, 15, have come on clay, where he’s already played one challenger final on so far.

Galan and Choinski have met twice already this year and are expected to be familiar with each other’s game. The last time they met, Galan won on grass in Eastbourne. Jan Choinski won the first encounter between the two which was on clay in Mexico City in the challenger circuit. He will be confident of emerging victorious again on a surface that has been kind to him thus far. Choinski has won 30 of the 53 matches he has played in 2023 with 19 of those victories coming on clay. He is yet to win a title or advance to a final this season but has played four semifinals so far. Choinski is playing in Hamburg for the first time and defeated the wildcard Marvin Moller in straight sets in the first round. He is currently ranked 151st in the live ranking after dropping down two places.
