Second seed Andrey Rublev and the unseeded Daniel Altmaier will on Thursday square off at the Hamburg European Open. The winner of this second-round tie will set up a quarterfinal showdown with either Zhang Zhizhen or Yannick Hanfmann. Daniel Altmaier is through to this round for the first time in what is his fifth appearance here. He defeated Richard Gasquet in straight sets in the first round, losing nine games in the process. This was his 26th victory of the season and 18th on clay. It helped him move back into the top 60 at number 55 in the live ranking. Altmaier's form on clay has seen him win one challenger title thus far.

Andrey Rublev is a former Hamburg Open champion. He won the title back in 2020, a season after he had finished as runner-up. This is his second appearance here since his triumph. On his return last season, he was eliminated in the second round. Rublev has been one of the in-form players on the tour this season. He has won 40 of the 54 matches he has played, culminating in five finals and two titles, both won on clay. The Russian arrived in Hamburg after his Swedish Open win and is now on a five-match winning run. He looked a bit shaky though in his opening-round tie against Bernabe Zapata Miralles. The current world number seven was forced to come from a set down to win with the third set requiring a tiebreak.
