Causing an upset in the first round is one thing, following up in your next match is another. Harriet Dart knocked out the 10th seed Daria Kasatkina in round one and now takes on Dalma Galfi for a place in the third round. The winner takes on either 18th seeded Veronika Kudermetova or unseeded Maryna Zanevska in the last 32.  Dart began this week ranked 88th in the world and is attempting to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for only the second time. The other occasion the British player got that far was when at Wimbledon in 2019. Dart had to go to three sets to get past Kasatkina in the first round of this tournament with the middle set lost 6-1. This is the first time in four visits to the US Open that she has managed to get into the second round.

Dalma Galfi began this tournament just three places below Dart in the world rankings. Just like her oppponent, Galfi is in the second round of the US Open for the first time. Her best performance in a Grand Slam is reaching the second round at this year's Wimbledon championships. Galfi has had success on clay in 2022 winning a Challenger Tour event held in France last month. A grass court ITF title was also won this year. The first round of the US Open saw her defeat unseeded Nuria Parrizas Dias in straight sets. Dart seems to be in the better form and she can get the win to make it into the third round.
