The Western Conference Finals in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs heads back to Dallas for game three of this best-of-seven duel. The second-seed Dallas Stars face a potentially ‘must-win’ spot here as they trail 2-0 in the series to the top-seeded Vegas Golden Knights. They’ll now attempt to even the series up on their home ice before heading back to Vegas for game five. A Stanley Cup Finals meeting with either the Florida Panthers or the Carolina Hurricanes awaits the winner. It’s looking most likely to be Florida as they currently hold a 3-0 lead over the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference.
Dallas and Vegas played out two extremely tight games in the first two meetings of this series with both going to overtime. Vegas would emerge 3-2 winners in game two, following up their 4-3 win in game one. The Golden Knights hold all the momentum coming into the American Airlines Center as they will likely be targeting just one win in the next two. Stealing a game in Dallas would set up a potential game five closeout opportunity in front of the home fans for Vegas. The visitors will be boosted by their excellent away record in the regular season. The Knights won 26 of their 41 road trips for a winning percentage of 63.4%.
While the Stars will likely be disappointed by the hole they find themselves in, they shouldn’t be disheartened. The first two games were highly-competitive and on another day we could be looking at a 1-1 series or even 2-0 to Dallas. Due to the ‘golden goal’ rule, overtime hockey usually carries with it a high degree of variance. There’s plenty to be optimistic about in the Stars’ two away performances in Vegas and enough evidence to point towards them taking game three.
