2027 ODI Cricket World Cup
After Australia defied the odds to claim their sixth world title at the 2023 World Cup in India, the 2027 edition will take us to the Southern Hemisphere where the tournament will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October and November 2027. South Africa will make eight venues available, Zimbabwe has two and Namibia has one. This will mark the second time that South Africa and Zimbabwe have served as co-hosts for the prestigious competition, having also hosted the 2003 tournament, while Namibia will be doing so for the first time ever.
ODI Cricket World Cup 2027 Qualification
As co-hosts for the 2027 ODI World Cup, both South Africa and Zimbabwe will earn automatic qualification to the tournament, along with the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings as of 31 March 2027. Although Namibia are also serving as hosts, they will not be guaranteed a spot in the competition due to the fact that they are not a full ICC member. Therefore, they will have to earn a place in the competition through the standard qualification route.
The qualification process for the 2027 Cricket World Cup is already underway, with various tournaments set to decide which teams will secure spots at the main event. The CWC Challenge League Play-off acts as a relegation tournament, allowing teams from the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings to enter the qualification cycle following the T20I World Cup last year. The teams ranked 13th to 28th in the previous qualification cycle, along with the four teams advancing from the Challenge League Play-off, will join a 20-team qualification pool, all competing for the remaining four spots at the World Cup.
Additionally, the next two teams in the ODI World Rankings, excluding the hosts and those that already qualified, will earn direct entry into the CWC Qualifier. The remaining 20 teams are split into two groups: the CWC League 2 (eight teams) and the CWC Challenge League (12 teams). Teams in these leagues will either progress to the CWC Qualifier, be eliminated from qualification contention entirely, or compete in the CWC Qualifier Play-off for a final chance to enter the main qualifier. Notably, the Play-off will also determine the promotion and relegation between the two leagues.
As it stands, four teams have already advanced to the Challenge League: Bahrain, Italy, Kuwait and Tanzania. In addition, four teams have also been eliminated from CWC qualification: Bermuda, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Vanuatu.
