Third seed Cori Gauff will take on lucky loser Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her next match in the second round of the Dubai Open. Gauff has uncharacteristically lost her last two matches and will be eager to get back on the winning column. After losing in the semifinals in Melbourne to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka, Gauff was defeated in her next match in Doha. Despite her rating as one of the favourites to win the title, Gauff was defeated 2-0 by Karolina Siniakova. The world number three has had a strong start to the season even with this slump, winning 10 of 12 matches. She triumphed in Auckland to begin the year. Gauff, who made the semifinals here last year, defeated Cociaretto in their first meeting two seasons ago.

Elisabetta Cociaretto is making her debut in Dubai. She started things off in the qualifiers where after winning her first match, was eliminated in round two. Fortunately for the Italian, she got the nod to advance in the tournament as a lucky loser. In the first round, she defeated Elise Mertens in three sets, coming from behind to secure her first win of the season. This has seen her move up two places to 56th in the live ranking. Cociaretto has struggled with her form all season and has lost the same number of matches as she has won. Three of her wins have come on hard courts and so too have three of her losses. The winner here will play either Karolina Pliskova or Ashlyn Kreuger in the third round.
