Two National League West rivals going head to head on Friday, including the return of the beaten World Series team the Arizona Diamondbacks as they take on the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies have not won more than 74 games over the last five seasons, finishing bottom of the west the last two. This season looks set to be another struggle for them even if Kris Bryant manages to find a way to stay healthy, averaging just 61 games over the last two seasons. Charlie Blackmon continues to lead off but he too suffered from missed games in 2023. Dakota Hudson is the only notable addition, coming over from the St Louis Cardinals. He had an ERA of almost five last year so the new surroundings need to work as he could be lit up a mile high.

It will be interesting to see how the Diamondbacks respond to the World Series loss and whether there is a hangover from that defeat or if it has made the team more fired up than ever. They have added some pop in Eugenio Suarez and Joc Pederson as well as a veteran presence in Randal Grichuk. The starting rotation has been bolstered by the arrival of Eduardo Rodriguez from Detroit, long thought of as a potential star in Boston before that, he has never quite hit those heights but a career-low ERA and WHIP of 3.30 and 1.15 last year make him a great number three behind Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly.
