The first-place Colorado Avalanche host the seventh-place St. Louis Blues for this Central division clash in the NHL on Wednesday. The Aves came out of the gates red-hot in the 2023/24 season with six consecutive wins. Since then, the 2022 champions have cooled off somewhat as they have now lost their last two on the trot with back-to-back 4-0 road defeats to the Penguins and the Sabres. Their 12 points earned is tied for the fifth most in the NHL and also gives them a one-point lead over the Stars in the Central division. Colorado now returns to the Ball Arena where they have a 2-0-0 record so far on the year. They’ve scored 10 goals in front of the home fans while allowing only four in wins over the Blackhawks and the Hurricanes.
The St. Louis Blues have experienced a mixed start to the new season after finishing sixth in the division last year. Their season so far has certainly been up-and-down as the Blues have traded a win for a loss in each of their first seven games. A 5-0 away loss to the Canucks on Friday has left them with three wins, three defeats and one overtime loss on the year. Their seven points earned has St. Louis sitting seventh in the Central division, only one point above the last-place Blackhawks and five points behind their opponent today. This is the last of a four game road trip for the Blues before returning home to face the Devils on Friday. The Blues have been unable to find the net with consistency so far this year with a shutout loss in their last appearance, epitomizing their struggles so far.
