Fifth seed Ben Shelton will face off with unseeded Flavio Cobolli at the Mexican Open this Tuesday. They will battle in the first round with the winner taking on Rinky Hijikata or David Goffin next. Below is our prediction for this match.

Cobolli is having a torrid season, currently on a five-match losing run. The Italian hasn’t won at a Singles event, as his two victories came in Italy’s campaign at the United Cup.

But having a dominant record against Shelton, he will be confident of ending this losing streak. Cobolli has won twice in as many matches against Shelton.

Both successes were achieved last season with the most recent coming on his way to the Washington final. Cobolli, placed 39th in the live ranking, was last on the court three weeks ago in Rotterdam.

Shelton is also ending a lengthy break from the tour. The American hasn’t played since a second-round exit in Dallas almost three weeks ago.

The time spent to recharge his batteries and his strong form should have him confident of ending Cobolli’s 100% record in this tie.

Shelton has claimed six wins in nine outings and has a semi-final finish at the Australian Open as his highlight of the campaign. Currently placed 14th in the live ranking, Shelton produced a quarter-final finish last season in Acapulco.
